Receiving
Ask, and it shall be given; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto to. (Matthew Ch7. Vs. 7)

The biggest challenge we face as we read this verse is our own doubt. We have become so used to looking for evidence before we will believe anything that we forget that God exists beyond evidence – beyond our human ability to see, measure, or reason. If, we may ask, whatever we ask for is really given, why do poverty, and violence, and war exist? These important questions can only be answered by reaching beyond evidence; by searching the depths of our hearts in prayer and silence; by seeking the face of God in ourselves, and in our neighbor. As we step back from our habitual worry, and anger, and criticism, we create a space within our hearts for all the answers – for all that we have been asking and seeking so earnestly – to emerge.

Today I ask, I seek, and I knock. Today I believe that I am receiving, and finding, and that doors, as yet unseen, are opening for me. But what is it that I am asking for? What is it that I am seeking? I desire, above everything else, to discover God in everything, and to see God in everyone – to come into close and conscious communion with God, who is Life. Today, and everyday, I receive the gift of God in its fullness.

The Hymn:      Ye Servants Of The Lord

Ye servants of the Lord, each in his office wait,
observant of his heav’nly word, and watchful at his gate.

Let all your lamps be bright, and trim the golden flame:
gird up your loins, as in his sight, for awe-ful is his Name.

Watch; 'tis your Lord's command, and while we speak, he's near;
mark the first signal of his hand, and ready all appear.

O happy servant he, in such a posture found!
He shall his Lord with rapture see, and be with honor crowned.

Christ shall the banquet spread with his own royal hand,
and raise that favored servant's head amid the angelic band.

The Hymn:          God Moves In A Mysterious Way
                                       (#677, The Hymnal 1982)

The Hymn:           God Is Working His Purpose Out
God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year:
God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near;
nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

From utmost east to utmost west, wherever foot hath trod,
by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God;
give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me,
that earth may filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

What can we do to work God's work, to prosper and increase
the brotherhood of all mankind--the reign of the Prince of Peace?
What can we do to hasten the time--the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

All we can do is nothing worth unless God bless the deed;
vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed;
yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness and every gain divine!

O beautiful for halcyon skies, for amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties above the enameled plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air and music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
The Hymn:              Once To Ev’ry Man And Nation

Once to ev’ry man and nation, comes the moment to decide, in the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side; some great cause, some great decision, off’ring each the bloom or blight, and the choice goes by forever, 'twixt that darkness and that light.

Then to side with truth is noble, when we share her wretched crust, ere her cause bring fame and profit, and 'tis prosperous to be just; then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside, till the multitude make virtue of the faith they had denied.

By the light of holy martyrs, Christ, thy bleeding feet we track, toiling up new Calv’ries ever with the cross that turns not back; new occasions teach new duties, ancient values test our youth; they must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth.

Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong;though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong; yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown, standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above his own

The Hymn:         Let Saints On Earth In Concert Sing
Let saints on earth in concert sing with those who work is done;
for all the servants of our King in heaven and earth are one.
One family, we dwell in him, one Church, above, beneath,
though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death.
One army of the living God, to his command we bow;
part of the host have crossed the flood, and part are crossing now.
E'en now to their eternal home there pass some spirits blest;
while others to the margin come, waiting their call to rest.
Jesus, be thou our constant Guide; then, when the word is given,
bid Jordan's narrow stream divide, and bring us safe to heaven.

Things you can do to welcome our guests and visitors:
Be friendly but sensitive.
Some guests are shy, and some are nervous, or uncertain.
Be helpful – make sure that visitors have bulletins and Prayer Books.
Ask a visitor if he/she would like to go to Coffee Hour,
and then escort them to the Parish Hall.
Don’t just talk to people like yourself.

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE
READINGS
All
On this day we bear witness to the light of Christ
With all the faithful of every time and place:

With Isaiah and Jeremiah, prophets of Israel,
we await the promised salvation of the Lord,
and look for the coming of the one
who will bring justice and righteousness to the earth.

With John the Baptist, calling from the wilderness,
we cry: “Prepare the way of the Lord!
Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

The Word became flesh and lived among us,
And we have seen his glory. Alleluia!
